That One Click… It Looks Simple.

🎯 Operations: Processes look simple to the customer. The simpler they look, the more complex the background becomes. A great many operations run along the road from order to customer.

• Procurement and purchasing stage: how much of which product to order, in what cycle, which checks to apply at goods receiving — all the processes that run until the products are ready for sale.
• Order intake stage: available-to-promise quantity, replenishing pick faces, order forecasts, inventory checks — the processes that keep products orderable from the customer's point of view.
• Order preparation and dispatch stage: picking route planning, deciding on picking methods, packing, handover to the carrier, loading onto the vehicle — the processes that take place inside the warehouse.
• Distribution stage: moving goods to the transfer hub, their journey between hubs, courier and vehicle planning, building the delivery routes — the processes that take place between warehouse and customer.

📊 Data: The “estimated delivery date: October 3” or “delivered tomorrow” promise you see when placing an order is only possible with data. For that, a great deal of data — “inventory must be accurate,” daily dispatch capacity, vehicle fill rates and more — must be both reliable and controlled through the ratios and metrics we call KPIs.

🔗 Integration: If the systems are not integrated, the simplicity the customer sees disappears in an instant. A customer wants to return a product to a carrier branch with a single code. From the customer's perspective this is a simple transaction. Behind it, however, sits an integration spanning the warehouse, the carrier, customer service, finance — even the bank.

As operations managers, the only reason we manage all this complexity is to give our customers the comfort of that one click.

Because once you have given the customer that one-click ease, all the complexity and difficulty in the background finally means something.
